US VegWeek–Celebrating Locally (Week 18)

Mark your calendars! Compassion Over Killing is hosting it’s fifth annual US VegWeek on April 22-28. What a super fun way to connect and, according to the website, explore a wide variety of meat-free foods while discovering the many benefits of vegetarian or vegan eating—for our health, the planet, and animals.

Inspired by the idea of raising local awareness of the plant-based lifestyle, I set out to get a small local group of VegPledgers to track their week-long progress on One Lazy Vegan’s facebook page. Well, thanks to the excitement created, and the generosity of others, that has quickly snowballed into a week full of local events!

I started by simply creating a Local VegWeek event page. I asked, “For those of you who are not already vegetarian or vegan, are you interested in taking the seven day pledge?” and encouraged them with the reminder, “Remember, you’re not in this alone: in the weeks leading up to the event, I’ll be posting all sorts of vegetarian and vegan tips! Throughout the week, you can count on me and the rest of the One Lazy Vegan community to answer your questions, and give you delicious recipe ideas. Remember, us veggies aren’t just limited to side dishes and vegetable plattes! There’s a whole bounty of amazing natural plant-based foods out there, just waiting to be discovered!”

To my surprise, a few dozen people had quickly signed up. As of tonight, there are a whopping 39 local people who’ve taken the VegPledge from my page! Wow!

Then, I figured, an active local group of that size needs some actual events, right? So I put some feelers out to see if people would be interested in a vegan potluck. I happen to have a beautiful photography studio just perfect for hosting small events, and would love for the space filled with those curious about plant-based nutrition along with the aroma of delicious vegan treats. Again, to my surprise, one potluck turned into two! Thanks to the generosity of two local food creatives, both potlucks will feature a different vegan cooking demonstration!

I really cannot give enough thanks and gratitude to Andrea Mills of Betty Rawker and Chef Steve Segal of Capricorn Catering. The generous gift of their time, skills, and ingredients, will certainly help make these events fun, memorable, and successful. Thank you!

Betty Rawker will be helping us make our own Raw Vegan Brownie Sundae with a scoop of Raw Vegan Raspberry Sorbet covered in Vegan “Magic Shell” with coconut & cacao nibs. Oh my goodness. And Chef Steve will be featuring a veggie sushi roll demonstration! My tummy is already rumbly.

It’s not too late to set up some VegWeek events in YOUR area! Simple and fun. You could really help raise awareness, spread the word, and in turn, make a dent in the number of animals and animal products consumed in that week, and hopefully, the weeks beyond!

Here’s the LOCAL VegWeek Event Schedule:

Prior to VegWeek: Working out details to meet at Dallas Health & Vitality Center to check out their vegetarian and vegan shopping options. Also, a recipe and cookbook exchange! Details coming soon.

If you like, you can also bring your own plate and fork, to be a little more sustainable :) Make your own dessert at 11:30am; Potluck Noon-1:00pm. RSVP.
